This morning we were headed into Kona to get coffee with detour to Kmart first. Got alert that a missile was heading our way. We were locked down in Kmart for about 20 minutes before they realized the message was sent in error. So we finished getting our things at Kmart and went for coffee. On with the day....
We went to Kona Joe coffee tour. Kan Joe is the world's first trellised coffee plantation. They grow coffee like wine on vines.
Our next stop was Captain Cook Memorial but we couldn't find the entrance or parking to try to get to the entrance so we continued on to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National park. Pu'uhonua is a place of refuge. In old Hawai'i, if you had broken a law, the penalty was death. Your only option for survival was to elude your pursuers and the reach the nearest pu'uhonua, place of refuge. If you reached this sacred place, you would be saved. You had to get over the lava rocks and harsh waves from the ocean but you would be saved.
After the park, we continued down to Kalae or South Point. Kalae is the southernmost point in the United States. It says no diving but there were definitely cliff divers...
