Iceland!

Iceland is beautiful!

Castle Fraser (last day in Scotland)

Castle Fraser is a huge castle.  Originally known as Muchall-in-Mar, construction of the elaborate, 5-story castle was begun in 1575 by the 6th Laird of Fraser, Michael Fraser.  It was completed in 1636.  The castle was modernized in a classical style in the late 18th century.  A few reconstructions happened changing the castle a little with each one.  In 1921, the Pearson family bought it.  They restored the castle as a shooting lodge and, in 1976, gave it to the National Trust for Scotland.

The gardens there were beautiful!

Train to Inverness... search for Loch Ness ;-)

So you can't go to Scotland and not look for Loch Ness, right?   The day I had booked to go on the train to Inverness and Loch Ness it was pouring rain.... and never quit.  I made the best of it but it was a bit miserable.  :-(   My shoes were soaked all day.  I did manage to see a few things though.

I walked over to the Inverness Church.

The Loch Ness Exhibition was portrayed as "here's all the facts, from both sides of the existence of the Loch Ness Monster, you decide."  However, in reality, it was all about disproving the existence.  It was very disappointing and I would not recommend it.

Urquhart Castle is mostly ruins on the banks of Loch Ness that date from the 13th to the 16th centuries.  Founded in the 13th century, Urquhart played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century.  It was a royal castle and raided on several occasions.  It was abandoned in the 17th century and placed in state care in the 20th century.  It was wet and cold, but I persevered (learned that from Clara ;-)  and went through the ruins.

After that, I was pretty much done with the rain and the cold.  However, the train station would not let me exchange my ticket to leave earlier, so I camped out at a restaurant and enjoyed a drink, some dinner, dessert, and the warmth.  Overall, a good day but definitely could have been better without the pouring rain.
